The Royal-initiated Kui Buri National Forest Reserve Area Conservation and Rehabilitation Project, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province

Royal Initiatives:

On 6 October 1993, His Majesty the King gave an initiative to representatives of various government agencies including the Commander-General, 1st Army Area Command, the Director-General, Royal Irrigation Department, the National Park, the Director-General, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, the Governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province as well as the Secretary-General of the Royal Development Projects Board concerning the enhancement of the water storage capacity of Yang Chum Reservoir in Kui Buri District of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The initiative stated that the agencies considered building check dams in the areas above Yang Chum Reservoir to store water for uses which will help retard the water flow to prevent flooding, to maintain soil moisture and to provide water for elephants. The construction of check dams could be done at intervals or of a shape of a water pond or a skull connected with a pipeline system to disperse water and create moisture to the forest which will continue to serve as a food source for the elephants.

On 8 November 2005, His Majesty the King accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited the Royal-initiated Yang Chum Reservoir at Kui Buri District of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. His Majesty gave an initiative to Mr.Sompol Panmanee, the Secretary-General of the Royal Development Projects Board at that time, and the Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, to consider seeking guidelines to increase water in the reservoir at Bueng Canal, to release 9 millions of fish fingerlings and to continue building check dams above the Yang Chum Reservoir.

Objectives:

1. To fulfill and extend the royal initiative in conserving the forest resources and wildlife in the areas of Kui Buri National Reserve.

2. To build check dams which will help retarding the water flow and preventing floods.

3. To enhance moisture in the area, collect sediments and serve as a water sources for elephants and wildlife.

Implementations:

  1. Building integrated check dams
  2. Setting up a collecting plot of sansal wood which is an important plant species of the country
  3. Rehabilitating the forest in the areas of Kui Buri National Reserve
  4. Creating abundant water sources and food sources for wildlife

Benefits:

  1. The project can complement water storage in the watershed areas of Yang Chum Reservoir and relieve flooding in the area.
  2. The project helps enhance soil moisture in Kui Buri Forest and provides a water source for wild elephants. It will also create a food source for the elephants in the future.

Achievements:

1. The Project fulfills His Majesty’s royal initiative in rehabilitating the forest to serve as abundant watershed areas which can also prevent inundation in the flood season with the help of check dams to slow down the water flow. The project also enhances moisture to the forest and provides water sources for elephants which in turn helps reduce the problem of intrusion of farmlands by elephants.

2. A plot of collection of sansal wood which is an important plant species of the country with a small number left was set up to conserve and conduct studies and researches regarding the plant species. Vetiver grass was also grown to conserve soil and water which helps add fertility to the forest.
