The SUPPORT Project under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit

 

Royal Initiative:

The project was established on July 21, 1976, according to the royal initiatives of Her Majesty the Queen to provide the supplementary occupations for the farmers who have instable income from farming due to the fluctuating rainfall patterns and climatic changes, resulting in the inadequate income to raise the entire family. Moreover, the promotion of supplementary occupation to the people by stimulating the use of local wisdom is a way to preserve the national heritage and identity. The project was later extended to conserve water and endangered wildlife to enhance the people’s awareness in the importance of water and wildlife by providing training on forest plantation, care of nature and making use of forest products. Presently, an incresing number of SUPPORT projects are set up in every region of the country to help the people to earn income from the occupations that the project promoted as well as to serve as a learning centre for the local people.

Objectives:

1. To be the centre of handicraft training courses and a shopping centre for distributing the handicraft products made by the local people. This will help the needy to have supplementary income to support the family and to live in a sustainable manner according to the royal initiatives.

2. To restore, promote, preserve and develop the handicraft work.

3. To be the information source on plants and animals for the people emphasizing the concept of “learning by doing” as well as to supply the plant varieties and animal breeds to the people to use in the farming activities.

4. To stimulate the participation of the people in the conservation of the forest, water sources, and endangered wild animals by promoting the planting of forest, and instilling the awareness of the benefits and the sustainable use of forest.

Benefits:

1. The people get higher income and have supplementary occupations. This will enable them to have better well-being.

2. The handicraft works are rehabilitated, maintained and supported. As a result, the project is now well-known among Thai and foreigners.

3. The people have more knowledge in agriculture and can apply the knowledge gained into practice.

4. The number of trees and wildlife has increased, bringing about benefits to the conservation of watershed areas and other natural resources.

 

Additional Comments:

The project attracts the people’s interest very much. Resultantly, the number of members has greatly increased.
