The Royal-initiated Khun Mae Kuang Forest Area Development Project, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province

Royal Initiatives:

His Majesty the King gave a royal initiative to consider developing the Khun Mae Kuang National Forest Reserve area to become an abundant watershed source and a place where the local people can make a living in harmony with nature and the occupations are provided for the people.

Later, His Majesty granted other initiatives to serve as development guidelines as follows:

- Selection and arrangement of proper settlement areas for the people in the area to enable them to carry out a living from agriculture which will prevent further forest encroachment in the future

- Acceleration of reforestation in deteriorated areas and restoration of watershed sources

- Conservation of abundant forest areas and enforcement of proper measures for protecting them.

- Construction of check dams throughout the project area to increase moisture in the forest and provision of water as needed to support the areas

 

Objectives:

1. To protect and preserve the abundance of the natural forest so that it remains a watershed source and habitat for animals. Simultaneously, this will help to conserve the environment as well as restore the destroyed forest back to its rich nature.

2. To solve problems concerning allocation of land for people to make a living on the project site within the National Forest Reserve and to improve the basic infrastructure concerning water source, and land for making a living.

3. To raise the quality of life of the people in the project area so that they can maintain a living at a level appropriate to the local conditions.

4. To extend appropriate results of the study and research conducted by the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province, among the people living in the project area.

 

Areas of Implementation:

Khun Mae Kuang National Forest Reserve

Thep Sadet Subdistrict and Pa Muang Subdistrict in Doi Saket District, and Ban Sahakorn Subdistrict and Huai Kaew Subdistrict in Kae On District, Chiang Mai Province

Implementations:

1. Water source development, to provide water for the villagers living within the project area to use in their daily consumption and agricultural activities, as well as to supply water to support forestry development around the watershed areas which consist of the establishment of water sources for agriculture, daily consumption and forestry development.

2. Forest development, to implement development activities for protection, maintenance and restoration of forest, watershed areas, as well as the environment which includes protection and maintenance of forest, prevention of encroachment and forest fires, reforestation, as well as development and restoration of the forest conditions.

3. Land development, to set up the activities for proper land use and the development work to create a place for people to make a living which comprises survey and land use planning, resettlement programme for the people who used to live in the project area, soil and water conservation, soil quality development.

4. Occupational development, to develop and promote the people’s occupations in and outside the agricultural sector which involves development and promotion of occupations on agriculture, livestock, and cottage industry

5. Basic infrastructure development, to provide basic infrastructure such as road and electricity which consists of development of electricity system and transportation system.

6. Environmental development, to manage the community environment and reduce the use of chemical substances to prevent accumulation of toxic residues.

7. Human resource development, to organize training courses for government officials and other people who help operate the project.

8. Follow up work, to follow up on the progress and to evaluate the results periodically.

 

Benefits:

  1. The project will be able to protect and preserve the abundant forest area covering 3,200 hectares (20,000 rai).
  2. The deteriorated area of 960 hectares (6,000 rai) will be restored, maintained and developed to remain an abundant forest.
  3. An area of about 144 hectares (900 rai) will be arranged and developed for the people to make a living.
  4. The project will develop and promote suitable occupations both in and outside the agricultural sector to raise the standard of living of the people.

Achievements:

1. The survey is conducted for marking the project boundaries and clearly classifying suitable forest areas, residential areas, and areas for making a living.

2. In the areas with abundant forest and watersheds, the implementations are carried out to enhance, protect, and conserve the areas.

3. The improvement and restoration of the deteriorated forest areas is managed to complement land use management.

4. The local people are promoted with the idea of harmonious cohabitation between the community and the forest without encroaching and harming wild animals.

5. The agricultural development is promoted to raise the standard of living and increase income of the villagers.
